Hello to all. Here it is....the moment you have all been waiting for. The first installment of Sara's recommended reading! I can hear you all cheering now...silently. Anyway, the purpose of these lists are to introduce you to some books that you probably would not pick up otherwise, but I think you need to be exposed to. In light of this, I am going to begin with a genre that most of you probably haven't touched: Sara's Top Five Medical/Science and Sci-Fi Reading (I can now hear all of you groaning, but I promise these will be good!) 1. Author Kathy Reichs ~ This is a new discovery for me. I just found this author this summer and I have already read everything she's written. She is a forensic anthropologist as is her heroine, Dr. Temperence Brennan. Her first book is Deja Dead, but since there is a lot of graphic description and questionable language I don't recommend that as your first taste. Try Cross Bones, her latest. Tempe goes on site in the Holy Land and there are some interesting religious controversies at the heart of the plot...makes for an interesting read. I also highly recommend the show she produces. Called Bones it features Dr. Brennan and her FBI partner Seely Booth. There's always an interesting story, lots of humor and David Boreanez stars in it...what more could you ask for??? Catch it on Wednesdays 7pm on Fox. 2. Deception Point by Dan Brown ~ Yes, he wrote the Da Vinci code, but don't hold that against him. His books are terrific!!!! This one features a saavy femal heroine, a goverment conspiracy and aliens all in the arctic...Fox Mulder has nothing on this! It may not sound appealing, but it is a great book and I promise once you start, you won't be able to put it down. And Dan Brown is the King of major storyline twists. 3. Chromosome 6 by Robin Cook ~ Cook has been hailed as the master of the medical thriller and I would have to agree. This is one of his better ones and it is nothing like what you would expect. The controversies of cloning are at the center and begs the question...what does it really mean to be human? 4. Troubling a Star by Madeline L'Engle ~ Most of you have probably read A Wrinkle in Time and if you haven't I encrouage you to try it. However, this particular book is turning into one of my favorites. It's about a teenage girl traveling to Antarctica and gets mixed up in a old mystery concerning her friend's uncle. I haven' finished it yet, but I've already decided that I need to take a trip to Antarctica as well! 5. Jurassic Park and Timeline by Michael Crichton ~ The movies are amazing, but the books are ten times better! And for all of my french people, Timeline is right up your alley featuring a castle in 15th century France. Well, that is all for now, but look for more of Sara's Top Five in different genre's coming soon! |
